Robert Martin Gumbura Dies

Jailed rapist Robert Martin Gumbura has died at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison.

Gumbura who was serving a 40-year jail sentence (later reduced to 20) over four counts of rape reportedly succumbed to Covid-19 related complications.

He was on his way to the hospital when he died.

Investigative journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono confirmed the development on his official Twitter handle. He wrote;

Zengeza West MP Job Sikhala also confirmed Robert Gumbura’s death. Sikhala revealed that before he died from Covid-19 he was suffering from a mental illness.

“I am shocked that Gumbura passed on a few minutes ago at Chikurubi Maximum Prison. Information we are receiving is that he was having mental challenges of late,” Sikhala wrote on Twitter

Robert Gumbura was the former leader at RMG Independent End Time Message Church before he was incarcerated at Chikurubi.

In 2014 he was convicted on four counts of rape and one on possession of pornographic material.

Initially, he was sentenced to 50 years in prison before  10 years were suspended  on condition of good behavior, resulting in an expected sentence of 40 years.

In  2020, following yet another appeal,  Gumbura’s prison sentence was slashed in half.  High Court judges, Justice Felistus Chatukuta and Justice Pisirayi Kwenda who presided over his appeal cited that the original decision by the Magistrates’ Court was “a bit outrageous and unjust.”

As of 2021, Gumbura was serving his time whilst waiting for pending appeals and an application for bail.
